This is one of the first questions after installing WordPress – “How to install a WordPress plugin?”. Plugins are the heart of your WordPress installation – they help you to extend the functionality of your website.
There are thousands of paid and free plugins. I want to show You step by step how you can handle it.
Wait for a second
Before you start to complain that you don’t have the ability to install plugins please make sure that you are using self-hosted WordPress installation. If you are using WordPress.com there is an option to use own plugins but only in a paid plan.
How to install a plugin using plugin search
You need to go to the WordPress dashboard and click on Plugins -> Add new
You need to enter the name of the plugin in input Search plugins…
After that, you will see the list of plugins matching your entered text.
We have entered “post duplicator” and we have found it. Now we need to click on the Install Now button.
After w while you will see a button Activate instead of button Install now. Click on it.
That’s it. You have an active plugin. Now you need to configure your new plugin. Configuration on each plugin is completely different so I can’t explain it step by step. Don’t worry – configuration of many WP plugins is intuitive and you will handle it.
How to install a plugin using plugin Upload
You will need this method especially for the paid plugins that you can’t install using plugin search. You need to download the desired plugin from producer website. After that login to your WordPress dashboard and click on Plugins -> Add new and then click on Upload plugin button.

The last step is to click the Activate button.
